At First Glance

It's fun to look up and see nothing but clouds. Then you look again.

Mad Dog

Like a mad dog about to leap and bite its victim, the storm clouds dampened our drive with steady rain for twelve hours during our last visit to South Carolina in Autumn of last year.

Traffic Congestion

There's traffic congestion even if the cars are parked. It's time for the birds to drop their air missles on unsuspecting mall shoppers heading for their cars in Sugar Land.

Pascagoula, Mississippi Off U.S. Interstate 10

The plane is plain and flat but not the hues. It's usually afternoon when we drive through Pascagoula, Mississipi on our way to South Carolina, but on one late start we reached it in the evening and soon darkness fell after this shot was taken. The bayous, bays and lake leading to the gulf looked eerie at night, like silver or blue ribbons on black. I like the simplicity of this landscape. It reminds me of plane geometry or just plain geometry.

Red Skies At Night

The old adage "Red skies in the morning, sailors take warning; Red skies at night, sailor's delight" is not ture in this case. This was the sky behind our house in the evening before the devastating Hurricane Ike. It eventually turned purple and deep blue with the red and pink hues remaining closer to the horizon.

Blue Ridge Mountains, Friday, November 28th

Only another human being who loves to look at the sky would understand why I would take a salvo of shots of clouds. In one day, I took over three hundred photographs of the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains skies. The above photograph was taken at 11:00 o'clock in the morning with the blinding sun. I saw another skywatcher standing in the middle of a bridge taking a photograph of the same sun and clouds. I wondered whether he was a Friday Skywatcher. I used center-weight metering and a UV filter. All the photographs were taken in a moving vehicle. I had a more important mission that Friday - shopping in Asheville, North Carolina.

Rolling In

The day before Hurricane Ike. The reddish tinge of the clouds was a reflection of the sunset. Thick clouds were rolling from the east while the setting sun, set the sky ablaze on the west.
